CURRICULUM: Kansas History and World Geography

1.      Course Description: In this class we will study the Geography of the World as well as the rich culture of Kansas.

2.      The geography course in the seventh grade should familiarize students with their world using the Essential Elements and Geography Themes. Students should develop skills and knowledge about location, place, human/environmental interaction, movement, and regions. The course should compare and contrast these themes across all continents. Special attention should be given to the most essential skills and knowledge of the discipline. Instruction should feature examples from a variety of geographic regions. The course should be rigorous and relevant with instruction that integrates thinking skills historical processes, and content so that students are able to apply their learning to their own lives. Students are able to apply their geographic knowledge to their community, state, nation, world and themselves. Instruction should also include the integration of concepts and principles from economics, civics, history and humanities.

3.       Expectations: I have high expectations for the students in my room. I expect the students to achieve academically to their fullest potential. I expect students to contribute in a positive manner to our classroom.

  1. MAKE-UP WORK If a student knows he/she will be absent for a certain hour or day, he/she must talk to teachers prior to the day of absence and be ready to participate on return to school. (vacations, trips, etc.) ● If you miss school because of a school sponsored activity all work must be completed as if you were present. If a student must have a continuing doctor or dental appointment, he/she should attempt to stagger times, so that all absences do not occur during the same class hour each week. Beginning from the date the student returns to school after an excused absence, he/she is allowed the same number of days missed as the length of time to make up work missed. (longer time could be allowed). It is the responsibility of the student to contact the teacher and make the necessary arrangements. After the allotted time the late work policy will be followed.

  2. PLAGIARISM AND ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty is not acceptable. Cheating, defined as copying another student's work and claiming it is your own and plagiarism, defined as the use of another person's original ideas or writing without giving credit to the true author, are both prohibited practices. Materials taken from electronic sources are covered by this policy. A student who engages in any form of academic dishonesty will be subject to the loss of credit for the work in question, as well as other disciplinary measures.

  3. LATE WORK Students will be allowed: 1-3 days from the date of assignment will receive 50% credit 3+ days from the date of assignment will receive 0% credit.

  4. ELECTRONIC DEVICE All Electronic devices will be turned in or not allowed in the possession of students during tests.

REPORT CARDS

In an effort to conserve resources and more importantly give parents access to their students’ grades at any time, Wellsville Middle School will be encouraging parents and students to use PowerSchool to access grades. We will not be printing progress reports during the school year. If parents or students would like to check their progress in any class they simply need to log on to any computer with Internet access and sign into their account. The account will give detailed information for each class the student is enrolled in. If you have not created a PowerSchool account, please contact the office and request a copy of the PowerSchool Parent Letter. This letter details step by step instructions on how to setup your account. It will provide you with a temporary login and password. You may set up one account for multiple students. You can access PowerSchool through the Wellsville District Website at www.wellsville-usd289.org and select PowerSchool Public from the quick links on the right hand side of the page.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURE (RULES)

  1. Come to class on time. Standing outside the door and rushing in after the bell has begun to ring will constitute a tardy. You must be IN YOUR SEAT when it begins ringing to be counted on time.

  2. Begin the warm up activity at the sound of the tardy bell. Directions will be on the projection screen or the board. Please do not wait for me to remind you to begin since I need to take roll and attend to other duties for the first few minutes of the period. When I begin class, directions for the warm up may be taken down, so don't delay.

  3. Attend to personal needs before coming to class. I have been instructed not to give passes to lockers and to limit passes, so please do not ask for a pass unless you have a true emergency.

  4. Remain in your assigned seat unless you have permission to get up. Throw trash away at the end of the period on your way out.

  5. Glass bottles are not allowed in the classroom. ● With teacher permission, WATER bottles with lids are permitted. No other beverage allowed. ● No backpacks are allowed in the classroom. Small purses are permitted. ● No blankets are allowed in the classroom. ● No food items without teacher permission. ● No sunflower seeds are allowed. Be sure to ask first.

  6. Bring required materials every day unless you are otherwise directed.

  7. Talk only when permitted. Be aware of the situation since quiet talking is allowed in some situations and speaking to the entire group without raising your hand may be allowed in others. I will remind you once and expect compliance.

  8. Use polite speech and body language. Unkind teasing and impolite behavior is unacceptable. Swear word and cursing is not allowed.

  9. Do not cheat. Students caught cheating will receive a zero and a phone call home. Both the student who shares his work for an independent assignment AND the person who copies it will suffer the same consequences. I expect you to do your own work and to be sure no one can copy it.

  10. Follow the teacher's directions immediately.
